Ralph Barrat Quartet
Frank Sinatra fans will have the world on a string when the Ralph Barrat Quartet returns to Pat’s House of Jazz, in the Osborne Bay Pub.
“Barrat’s distinct vocal style is reminiscent of the in-the-pocket swing of Frank Sinatra, the smooth-as-melted-chocolate delivery of Mel Torme and the edgy interpretations of Bobby Darin,” says the series publicist Gloria Collins.
Looking mighty fine in their classy tuxedos, the quartet, featuring vocalist Barrat, pianist Tom Vickery, bassist Joey Smith and drummer Ron Joiner, will deliver such Sinatra hits asCome Fly with Me and One for My Baby along with a repertoire of standards inspired by the great male vocalists of the past five decades.
“It all makes for a nostalgic afternoon of music that captures all the romance of the golden era of jazz,” Collins says.
Based in Comox, Barratt performs in several bands on the Island and in Vancouver, both as a vocalist and pianist, and has also been on the cruise circuit down south.
“Tom Vickery is a joy to watch as he almost bounces off his piano stool when he unleashes a torrent of chords,” says Collins. “It’s easy to see why he has hosted Victoria’s longest running weekly gig, the Thursday night jazz jam at Hermann’s Jazz Club in Victoria, which has been featuring local and visiting jazz artists for 30 plus years.”
Vickery and veteran bassist Joey Smith, an alumnus of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, enthusiastically toss musical ideas back and forth while tasty drummer Ron Joiner adds rhythmic flourishes.
This show is part of the weekly Pat’s House of Jazz series, presented by the Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society and supported by the Osborne Bay Pub.
